Change of Training Tonight, Tues 12 Dec

Looks like Meadow Walk will be too slippery for the session.
We’re planning to do a fartlek on the Leisure Centre field instead, subject to further inspection at 6.30. We did this very successfully a couple of years ago in similar circumstances. We’ll have lighting and cones.
So please bring off-road shoes or anything with some grip.
In the unlikely event of the field being tricky, School Hill is looking runnable.
So come along to the LC at the usual time with off-roaders as well as your usual road shoes and you’ll def get a good training session.

The Week Ahead 11 Dec 2017

On Tuesday new coach James Tucker is making his debut in a session of his own devising. Meadow Walk is a hill session in the Danes. To get there, you run up the alley opposite the Leis Ctre exit, and then left down St Kingsmark Ave, taking the fourth right up Dean’s Hill, then right into Meadow Walk. James will be waiting there at 7.10 to tell you all about the session.
Thursday’s treat is the annual visit to Neal and Clare’s place at Hayesgate for the fancy dress run and supper. All Club members are welcome, but make sure Neil and Clare know you’re coming, via the Bulletin Board.
Arrive at Hayesgate on the right just off the A48 before St. Pierre (coming from Chep)for 19:00 briefing.Park leaving road access for milk tanker, space around the back too.Tasty Food after including soup, rolls and drinks.

Only 5.7km/450m climb, the Skirrid is suitable for fell running beginners, but have a talk with Andy or another experienced fell runner about clothing and shoes.
£5 entry on the day from 12.30, race starts at 2, a few hundred metres from Race HQ at the Skirrid Inn. Loads of prizes and hot food after.

Chepstow Harriers News Blog: The Week Ahead 4 Dec 2017

On Tuesday, Coach Kevin and Trainee Coach Danni are presenting a new session in Beachley. Not on the track this time, but a couple of hundred metres away in Coach House Road. Meet in the Ferry Inn car park at 6.50 ready for warmup and a few metres jog to the quiet estate. The form will be a fartlek speed-play session round the flat roads. As with all our sessions this one will be suitable for all our range of members including our recent C25K graduates.

Danni has spoken to the pub and we can pop in afterwards for snacks and a drink.

On Thursday we have the Sedbury run. Remember maps of our regular runs can be found on the Training/Coaching page.

Or you can join in the regular 45 minutes All Run Together route, also leaving the Leis Ctre at 7. The route for this will be decided by the Leader, but he/she can be persuaded by early, enthusiastic members.

The Week Ahead 27 Nov 2017

Tuesday’s Training is a Tempo run 20 mins out and 20 mins back on the Link Rd  & Severn Bridge.
Meet Coach Jane at the top of the Link Road. We will set off in pace groups. Warm up on the way there.
This session has hills; it will be difficult to run at consistent speed. Use a pace of seven to eight out of 10 on a perceived rate of exertion.  At comfortably hard pace - you can talk, but only a few words. Or between 10k and 1/2M pace.  Run at your effort.
On Thursday, The Social Sistas have arranged an Away Run from Lydney. Details are on the Bulletin Board.
There will also be the usual 45 minute Guide Run leaving the LC at 7.
And finally - on Sunday the next Gwent League at Pembrey Park, just beyond Llanelli. A list of who’s going has been started on the BB.

AGM 2017

53 Harriers at last night’s AGM heard good reports from the Chairman and Treasurer. Both were thanked for good work during their tenure as were all others who stood down.

In addition to the previously submitted names, James Boyle was elected as the Race Sponsorship Coordinator, and Rob Beves, Jonathan Carter, Lou Crockett, Carol Dunsbee and Richard Milliken were voted in as Committee Members Without Portfolio.

Item 4, the proposed new Membership Subscription scale, was adopted.

After a lively debate, the proposal to pursue the design of a new running vest was carried by 29 votes to 16, with four abstentions.

And finally, Syd Wheeler was awarded Honorary Membership and a scrummy cake for his many years of loyal service, and for reaching the age of 80 while still running for the club and breaking marathon records!

Sunday, 12 November 2017

The Week Ahead 13 November 2017

On Tuesday meet at the Leisure Centre and jog down to Steep Street for 25 min or 6 reps of long and short hill efforts. If you are worried that this may be too much just do the short  rep. and/or reduce the time to 20 min, says Geoff.
After training on Tuesday, the Coaches are holding an open meeting to discuss, among other things: new Coaches and potential Coaches; how to integrate C25K graduates; how best to use the help offered by Club members who don’t at this stage want to become qualified Coaches. We’ll be in the bar from 8.15.
It’s the monthly 5k time trial on the Severn Bridge on Thursday, starting at 7.30. We need  helpers - to man the finish and to act as the turnaround bollard. None of the roles are demanding and will earn the never-ending gratitude of the runners. Previous helpers have enjoyed grateful hugs and the occasional drink - well it could happen. Please enter your name in the Comments box below, or tell your favourite coach and claim your hug or drink.
And finally - the next Leisure Centre League cross-country on Sunday, at 11 at Rogerstone School, High Cross, just North of J27, M4.
There will be races for junior runners before the main race starts. They don’t have to be members of our Junior Section. All our daughters and sons are welcome. Please see the flyer.

The Week Ahead 6 Nov 2017

We’re down at the Beachley Track on Tuesday for one of Kevin’s Relays - teams of three doing 300 metres and 100 metre efforts. Meet you on the track ready to start at 7.
Kev would appreciate some help from any kind souls who aren’t planning to do the session. If you can, please tell us in the Comments box below, or just turn up at 6.50ish. We should be putting out the lights about then.
And if you haven’t had enough of Beachley, Thursday’s Run is down to the SARA HQ under the Bridge via the Wyebank estate.
The 45 minute gang will also be setting off for another stay-together run at 7 sharp. Please be ready to   start running on time.
And finally - a very important Gwent League at Brecon LC on Saturday. It’s the East Wales Championships and the main selection event for the Welsh Inter Regional Champs on Sat 9 December. I know it sounds very grand, but loads of Chepstow runners have run for the Region in recent years. There are 10-year age categories up to age 55 and above, male and female, and we can enter 15 runners in each age group. So any reasonably good for age cross-country runner stands a good chance of wearing the renowned purple vest. And the women’s and men’s selectors happen to be Chepstow Harriers.
To enter the E Wales Champs you need to seek out the EW tent, fill out a short form and pay your £1. PLEASE NOTE: All this applies to Junior Age Groups too. We usually have Harriers Juniors Running for East Wales.

Sunday, 29 October 2017

The Week Ahead 30 Oct 2017

Jog down to the top of the Severn Bridge cycle track on Tuesday where Coach Jane will be, ready for a 7.20 start for the Severn Bridge Hills.
2 x 15 minutes of 600 metre laps of continuous running with 3 minutes recovery back at the start. Each lap includes a long and short hill. 10k effort up the long hill and 5k effort up the short one. Use the downhills to recover. Practice pace judgement and aim for consistent lap times. Practice your running form.
On Thursday we have the November Club Champs, a night race in Great Barnetts and adjoining woodland.
Please report to the LC bar first to pick up your number and chip (it’ll be the one you were given for this year’s Handicap). Then drive to the main car park on the left hand side of the Usk Road, about half a mile along from the turn at the Budgens shop. Andy Creber the Organiser says aim to arrive at the car park for 7.

The 45 minute run starts at 7 led by Jackie

Message from Chair, Fairwater Runners

Dear East Wales Running Clubs,

as you may have heard, Fairwater are not running the Bog and Bryn this year, principally because of the large amount of work required before it (4 weekends for a work team with chainsaws, cutters etc.) We are however looking into running a similar, somewhat shorter but still tough event in future years that sticks to better maintained paths.

In preparation for this we will be leading a friendly run on Sunday 5th November, leaving Risca Leisure Centre at 10 am which includes an excursion to the top of Twmbarlwm. It is about 7 miles and covers road, track, path, grass and woodland. This is not a race, there are no prizes, no charge, it is not marshalled and sparsely if at all marked. We would however like to invite up to two runners from each club to join us for the run, after which showers and a room have been organised to socialise afterwards. We will have runners of various speeds leading groups, so no-one will be left behind (but runners should be used to hills and fell) although faster runners may have to wait for us as our fastest gents don't know the course either! All we ask is that those who attend complete a short questionnaire afterwards to help us in our planning for next year.

Please reply to me with an indication as to whether one, two or no runners will attend. If more than two would like to, please feel free to ask and provided numbers are reasonable we may be able to accommodate extras. (n.b. because this is not marshalled and includes road sections we need to limit numbers for safety).

I hope to see some of you on the 5th, and to hear your opinions afterwards,

Kind Regards

Rob u
(Chair, Fairwater Runners Cwmbran)

The Week Ahead 23 Oct 2017

Tuesday’s session is a 2 for the price of 1. School Hill and the Underpass Steps, 15 minutes on each.

And Thursday’s Run takes us over the Severn Bridge. It’s a good 10 miles if you accept the challenge of running all the way into England and back on the opposite side, but you can choose the distance that suits you by turning round at, say, one of the towers.

The Week Ahead team would like to hear in the Comments box from any members who do complete the challenge. Let us know how long it took you.

Meanwhile the 45 Minuters will be doing their usual all-stay-together run. Here again, the Weaker Head team will be delighted to hear how long that run took.

Sunday, 15 October 2017

The Week Ahead 16 Oct 2017

Tuesday's session is that old favourite, the Danes Loop. A nice fast downhill and a testing uphill. What more could a Chepstow Harrier ask for?

Then straight after come to the LC bar for our Have Your Say evening. Chip butties and lots of chat. What more could a Chepstow Harrier ask for?

And finally, Thursday's run is St Arvans, Porthcasseg, Gaer Hill and all points west. Head torch recommended. Or join in the 45 minute all-stay-together run on another imaginative course. What more could a Chepstow Harrier ask for?

Sunday, 8 October 2017

The Week Ahead 9 Oct 2017

On Tuesday hie down to Thornwell shops for that old faithful, the Loop. Such a worthwhile sessions, 1200 metres of up and down, with a marvellous warm-up in the jog down. If you drive down, get there by at least 7.15 to allow time for your warm-up and drills.

Thursday's run takes us to Mathern via Hayesgate, while those looking for a shorter, steadier run can opt for the 45 minute stay-together run.

And finally - on Saturday at the Llandaff Fields to the north-west of Cardiff the first Gwent League of the new season. Flatter and less muddy than Park Bryn Bach was on Sunday, we'll still have a good time. Watch the Captains' email for meeting times.

Sunday, 1 October 2017

The Week Ahead 2 Oct 2017

On Tuesday the first of this year's Severn Bridge 5k Time Trials. Starts at 7.30 at the usual place on the up-stream cycle track. As always don't forget your hiviz: we share the track with bikes, motorised and pedal.

Thursday's run is the choice of  the Boughspring runs, or as usual the 45 minute guided run welcomes those who want a not-too-fast continuous run with all staying together. We vary routes imaginatively and welcome suggestions.

And finally, on Sunday the first Gwent Leisure Centre League cross-country at the scenic and challenging Parc Bryn Bach by the Heads of the Valley road near Tredegar. Starts at 11. Watch for the meeting time to share cars. The cafe/park centre will host the post-race prize presentation for the Summer League. Stay for a hot drink and snack, and cheer on our series winners.

Sunday, 24 September 2017

Monday, 4 September 2017

The Week Ahead 4 Sept 2017

Up on the LC field Tuesday for a One Minute Fast/One Minute Jog session. Aim for 12 of each.
You should have heard about the Treasure Hunt on Thursday. Organised by our Paul Murrin, but as a North Glos Orienteering Club event, you can enter it on your own or as part of a team.

1. Meet at the back of the Castle on the grassy bank (NOT by the bottom car park, but near the top playground, just into the big gates). By 6:30pm so slightly earlier than the usual time. (You can actually start any time between 6 and 7pm)

2.The club are paying the entry fee for each team so you can just sign in at registration. Each team needs to sign in, but you can just enter as a team eg CH Trotters (Lisa, Tom and Jan) for example. That's one entry, not three.

3. You will then need to hire ONE electronic tag per team so if you can bring £2 for that bit it would be great.

4. You have a choice of three courses (short 2.8km, medium 4.7km, long 7.3km). The distances are as the crow flies so you will run further than this (unless you are a crow and can fly). The shortest route on the long course has been measured at 10.6km.

5. If you are too injured to run but you can walk then the short or medium course would be a fun thing to do. It's all around the town of Chepstow. No territory should be unfamiliar.

6. There is a junior course entirely traffic free, about 1km long. U16 can do the longer courses but need to be accompanied by an adult.

There's quite a bit of planning for this so to help with map printing and avoiding wastage etc can you book on this link which course you plan to go on:

Thursday's regular 45 minute guided run will also be on from the LC at 6.55, and there may also be some  quicker runners looking for a run at the same time.

Tuesday, 29 August 2017

: The week ahead 28 August 2017

Tuesday's track session is 4 sets of 400/200/200 with 200 slow jog recovery, and 2 mins between sets.
Thursday's Club run is the Wye Valley Walk, or the standard 45 minute out-and-back guided run.

Sunday, 20 August 2017

The week ahead 21st August

Tuesday's track session is a fartlek round the track. Runners will circle the track at a steady pace until the coach blows the whistle to signal an increase of pace for a number of seconds that is planned by the coach but is not known by the runners. Sounds hard, but we did it a couple of months ago with everyone surviving and indeed some even enjoying it!

You can be sure the the time spend running fast is always less than that doing the steady pace.

Thursday's run takes us across Piercefield Park, over the fields to Porthcasseg Farm, down to the road and up to Gaer Hill mast. Those wanting a long run can run over the fields to Pen y Parc on the St Arvans/Devauden road, and return via Trellech Grange. Otherwise turn left before then and return via St Arvans.

As always we also have the usual 45 minute steady out-and-back run option.

Sunday, 13 August 2017

The week ahead 14th August

Thank you to Kevin who is our Coach for training on Tuesday. A pyramid session run in time to help develop speed endurance.

On Thursday there is the club social run, The Gloucester Way.
The 45 min out and back Guided Run. Run at the pace of the slowest. For the slow runner, anyone not yet quick or strong enough, or someone recovering from injury.
On Saturday there is the the next race in the Fell series, the Four Fans.

Wednesday, 9 August 2017

I'm leading the run, so just a quick note to those that are joining me, the run will be on the road, well the path hopefully, so wear your road shoes.

The Week Ahead 24 July 2017

Tuesday's training is Kevin's Piggies Hill session. Meet as usual in the LC bar and jog together to the park.

And Thursday brings a new venture. Denise is organising a competition on the Severn Bridge followed by refreshments at the Thornwell Football Club. It's a 5k run on the downstream side of the Severn Bridge (as opposed to the upstream side where we do the 5k Time Trial). The twist? You have to predict your finish time and the winner is the one who gets nearest to their prediction.

Be down at the Bridge by 6.50 to do the prediction and fix on your timing chip.

And finally - we're putting on the Magor 10k on Sunday at 10am from Undy church hall. Race is full but check with Al Dobbs and Lou Crockett if you're helping.

The choice on Thursday:
Wales Coast Path run.
On our track, sets of 400, 200, 200.

Meet at our LC at 6.15.
On Thursday we host the Tintern Trot from Abbey Mill at 7.30. Help or run, but be there.

Sunday, 25 June 2017

The Week Ahead 26 June 2017

Tuesday's session is designed to improve running efficiency. 12 one minute efforts at 3-5k pace with one minute recoveries.
Thursday's run is over to Sedbury Lane, through the Diving Centre, Tidenham Church, Boughspring and back via Offa's Dyke path.
Also on the menu is the timed mile on our track. Originally for those getting to an age ending in zero in 2017, all are welcome to take part.
And as always we have the guided 45 minute run.
And finally - on Saturday we have our annual Charmouth coach trip. The 8 mile cliff top race, the Charmouth Challenge - is July's Club Champs as well as a Club Fell Champs.
Still time to book your place: only £10 for adults and £5 for children. Leaves LC at 9.30 (note change!) Race starts 2.30. Also 3 mile shortened version.
If you'd still with us, let me clear up any confusion about where to report on Club nights. The bar in the LC is where the MC will be, for meeting and greeting and sorting out running groups. But if it's summertime and you've come to do a track session, the Coach will be waiting on the track to get cracking at 7.

Monday, 19 June 2017

The Week Ahead 19 June 2017

Up on our track Tuesday for a fartlek or speedplay session. A long-established Scandinavian concept, the changes of pace give a marvellous training effect in an enjoyable way.
The choice on Thursday:
A long run on the Gloucestershire Way;
A steady out-and-back 45 minute run;
3 or 4 sets of 400m/200m/200m on the track.
Whichever you choose, please meet on the track at 6.50: our MCs may be good but even they have difficulty in being in more than one place at a time.
And finally - the Cotswold Way Relay on Saturday. We have 5 teams of 10, but we're still looking for at least one reserve for Team 5. The chances of a reserve getting a run are very high - just one injury, illness or domestic problem among the current 50 and we're in trouble.

Wednesday, 14 June 2017

Quizzers Needed Saturday Night

Just a quick reminder on a point I made in a previous Handicap Update, that next years Handicap Series will be my last as the organiser. As of this moment, I've had no offer from anyone to look at how it's organised, with a view of taking the organisation on when I've finished. So please be aware that after the last Handicap race next year, I'll be walking away from its organisation, whether anyone has come forward to take over its organisation, or not.

See you all at Chepstow Park Woods on Thursday, The Handicapper.

They will take into account Harriers runners times from Lydney Parkrun on Saturday 22nd, but not the Harriers runners times from the London Marathon on Sunday 23rd๐Ÿ˜‰.

Share cars were ever possible to help with parking, as space will be limited. There is some parking just off the road to The Cot, and at Fedw Woods. We will be double parking cars, so if you can't stay until the end of the evening, please don't park in the car park, or at least speak to the person doing the parking duties.

This races SPOT PRIZE will be awarded to the runner who wears the silliest socks(on their feet), as judged by me.

Hope to see you all there.

The Week Ahead 17 April 2017

Tuesday on our track, and take your partner for a Paarlauf.

We're at Brockweir/Hewelsfield on Thursday for an away run on part of the Offa's Orror course. If Mackenzie Hall car park is full, you'll find space at the village shop just up the road where we'll do the eating & drinking. Either way the run starts at the Hall at 7.

On Saturday you can run the legendary Cribyn, the next in the Club's Fell Race Series. Details on the website Competitions page.

And finally, it's the actual Offa's Orror on Sunday. If you'd not helping or running, you might well be up Lunnon running or watching the Marathon. Whichever, have a good time ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ƒ

The Week Ahead 10 April 2017

At last the waiting's over! Mr Evans's first Handicap of 2017 starts at 6.45 on Tuesday in Chepstow Park Wood. Parking is even tighter than ever this year now those nice Forestry folk have built a bank round the edges of the parking area. So please share cars and be prepared to park in Fedw Wood, on the right coming from Chep before you reach the Cot turnoff.
Your Handicap time should be listed on the Handicap page, but may not be there if you haven't renewed your membership.
There's a track session on the LC field Thursday followed by some frolics from the Social Sistas lol.
Also on Thursday Geoff Bayliss will lead a guided 45 min out and back easy run for those interested. It will be at the pace of the slowest. Meet on the LC field at 7:00.
Remember this week gives you two opportunities to garner Club Champs points: the Tuesday Handicap is one, and Saturday's Lydney park run is the other. Oh it's all too much...

Thursday's Running

 Just to clarify the options.

The 2 Woods Run. Great Barnetts Wood, Cockshoot Wood, then across the fields to the left of Fryth Wood to St Arvans. Through the village and if the light's good enough back across the fields the far side of the racecourse to Piercefield Park. If it's getting gloomy, run back along the footpath of the A466.

For those wanting a less hectic run Jen Danger is leading a gentler 45 minute out and back road-based run.

The third choice will continue the recent Thursday speed sessions but will not be at Beachley this time, but on the Leisure Centre track which has been cut and marked. Dick won't be there, but the regulars know what to do.

Tuesday, 4 April 2017

The Handicapper.

Sunday, 2 April 2017

The Week Ahead 3 April 2017

Be up on the Leisure Centre track Tuesday for a Pyramid Session led by Rich Milliken.

Thursday, 30 March 2017

Handicap Update #1

Hopefully I'll get the handicap times for the first race on Tuesday 11th April, published a week before the race, this will give you all a full 7 days to moan to me that your times are wrong๐Ÿ˜‰.

I've based the handicap times on the following:-
Fastest Lydney Parkrun time of 2017 (not including Saturday 8th April) plus a fiddle factor.
If you haven't done one of these Parkruns, it's based on a comparison of your fastest 2017 Severn Bridge Time Trial time, with someone who has done the Parkrun, and whose fastest Time Trial time is as closely matched as yours, plus the fiddle factor.
If neither of the above is possible, it's based on a 2017 Club Champs race time comparison, plus the fiddle factor (if needed).
And finally if a time still isn't possible, I made it up๐Ÿ˜.

An explanation on the Handicap rules and regulations can be found from the link at the bottom of the Handicap page, which can be reached from the Competition tab of the Harriers website.

Please be aware that if you haven't joined the Club, and your name isn't on the Members list, you want be allocated a Handicap race number, and no number, means you can't run the Handicap races๐Ÿ˜ž.

I'm still looking for help for the first race:-
2 parking attendants
3 start/finish helpers
If you can help please let me know.

And finally, I'll be organising the Handicap series for the rest of 2017, and again for 2018. I will then stand down, and hand over to someone else to organise them from 2019. If you would like to be that person, please see me for more information on what's required in its organisation.

Your Handicapper.
