The Week Ahead 31 Dec 2012

The weekend is the busy time for Harriers this week.

The Leisure Centre's shut for some reason on Tuesday, but there'll be some keen sorts looking for the first run of 2013 by the steps at 7pm.

We've been warned of some flooding on the route of  the Sedbury run on Thursday. Some forecast drier weather may find the run clear by then, but be prepared for an alternative run if not.

Now for the races at the weekend. The Kymin race at 2pm on Saturday is not only a fine introduction to fell racing but also a Mob Match between Chepstow and Les Croupiers. So it's a call for all Harriers to run and score points for the Club.

Then 11am Sunday at Pontllanfraith is the time and place for the next LCL cross-country.

The Kymin is a short fell race and with a day's rest you should have no problem in tackling the XC. Do them both and ensure your place in the Club pantheon.

The Week Ahead 24 Dec 2012

Owing to circumstances beyond our control there will be no Tuesday session this week ahead. We hope members will find something else to do.

But to make up for it there will be two attractions on Thursday.
In the morning from 10.30 at Brockweir's Mackenzie Hall the Stotties (with a little assistance from North Glos Orienteering Club) will be putting on a jolly village family orienteering challenge with maps and photos. Ingenuity and teamwork rather than fitness and navigational expertise will determine the prizewinners.  There'll be a bike-mounted course and a taped children's course, so fun for non-runners and kiddies alike. Please bring along £2 to cover map printing and refreshments.

Gill is brewing up a hot bean stew and baking potatoes, but entrants are asked to bring along puddings and other extras to share out.

And there's a barrel of real ale along with plenty of soft drinks for all. Parking is rather limited so please try to share cars if poss.

On Thursday evening, although the LC is shut we'll be doing the Old Ferry Inn run down to Beachley and back..

The Week Ahead 17 Dec 2012

The advertised session on Tuesday is Steep Street - 6 short alternating with 6 long hills.

Chris Rees is also offering a 25 minutes out/25 minutes back tempo run down the Link Road and partway across the S Bridge.

Thursday's run is a special Tour of the Town with prizes on offer for best seasonal fancy dress!

Come down to Spoons after for a pre-Christmas drink.

Then how about a new short fell race on Saturday as excellent preparation for the Kymin mob match on 5 January? Our own Andy Creber is the organiser of the Skirrid Race near Abergavenny and you can find all the details on

Club champs

Since googledocs is rubbish and has a problem (that is widespread), the easiest way to view the club championship results if it comes up with the message 'Sorry we are rubbish' is to go to 'File' (in the top left corner) then 'download'. Then once you've downloaded it you can view it. Ta da.

Bridge 5k On

Following a referee's inspection at 6.10pm, we are pleased to confirm that the Bridge TT is def on.

The water in the small puddles shows no sign of freezing.

Time Trial Tonight - Possible Change

There's a possibility that we may have to move tonight's Time Trial to the Link Road IF there is ice on the Severn Bridge.

As you first access the bridge there are some puddles which are liable to freeze over if the temperature drops as forecast. We will make a decision after an inspection at about 6, and post the result here.

The alternative will be three lengths of the Link Road - starting from the top - plus another 350 metres back up to the display sign.

Either way please meet at the Leisure Ctre at 6.45 as advertised. The run will start at 7.15.

The Week Ahead 10 Dec 2012

It's all downhill on Tuesday! Run helter skelter doen the length of the Link Road, jog back 800 metres, sprint down 400 metres, jog back another 800, sprint down 400, and jog back to the start,
Then do it all again.

On Thursday test your acquired speed in the Severn Bridge 5k Time Trial. Then get back and changed if you've booked your place in the Shangri La.

PLEASE NOTE - THE 5K STARTS AT 7.15! So meet at the LC at 6.45, or find your own way there in good time.

Then on Sunday it's the final race in this year's Club Champs - the Christmas Tree off-road 5 mile race at Ellwood in the Forest Of Dean. It's just down the road from Sling, where we'll repair after the race for food and drink at the Miners Arms.

There'll be further details later on the week in this space.

Chepstow team members were, Helen Duffield, Judith Austerberry, Becky Comins, Jane Horler, Pete Ward, Mike Lovell, Gerry Ashton and Syd Wheeler..

We believe this is the best East Wales performance ever.

Homepage piccies wanted...!

Hi all.

Noticed that our lovely quartet of smiley muddy ladies have been gracing the homepage for a while! Coming back from injury I'm not getting to many (any!) races at the mo so I'm really relying on your contributions and suggestions to update this part of the site...

So this is a quick call to arms to say that - if you've seen (or been a part of!) a cool Harriers-related piccie then please send it me. Will be happy to give it pride of place, plus possibly add a (rubbish) caption as well. You have been warned!

The Week Ahead 3 Dec 2012

Down to Thornwell Tuesday for the famed Loop.

5 for A/B/C pace groups and 4 for D/E/F with 2 minutes recovery between each. The plan is to do the last lap as a last-to-first ladder in two groups: A/B/C and D/E/F. Let's hope we can manage it.

Drive down to the Tesco car park if you want and warm up while you wait for the rest of your group.

Then it's the Boughspring runs on Thursday. Choose the 5+, 6+ or 7+ route. Remember to get together with your pace group before we start and then regroup at 1) Top of the Steps after the new Wye Bridge. 2) The A48 road crossing. 3) The route split junctions 4) The turnoff onto the Coleford Road before the run back.

BEWARE! Watch out for the kerb and bollards at the end of Mopla Road just before crossing the road at Castleford.

Have a jolly week!
