The Week Ahead 27 December 2010

Back to plan now the ice and snow have gone. Tuesday sees us over in Tutshill for the Severn Avenue session. This is a fairly flat 400ish metres quiet road with a nice downhill jog recovery.

The Leisure Centre is closed, but we’ll still be meeting by the steps for a prompt 7 o’clock leave. Or if it suits you, go straight to the Sedbury Lane/Severn Avenue junction. It’s the last turning on the right coming from the mini roundabout on Beachley Road.

On Thursday we’re doing our Tour of the Town run – now our traditional Christmas/New Year run.

On Sunday there’s a new local off-road run that some Harriers are doing.

Looks good and proceeds to charity.

Training Tonight - Tues 21 Dec

Just spoken to the Leis Ctre Duty Manager, and he will probably close the Centre some time after 8pm, partly depending on how many turn up for swimming.

That gives us time for a training session on the field or a not-too-long off-road run and a quick shower.

If you do drive down it may be wise to leave your kit in the car rather than a locker.

The bar won't be open, but Tom Gibbs has already suggested that we adjourn to the Bellhanger afterwards.

CLUB CHAMPS 2011 - Provisional info

A snowy final race for 2010

2010 has almost been and gone, we've just had the final race of the 2010 series, and the results are being calculated.   Meanwhile.... the club champs team of Vanessa, Sue and now joined by Steve Harris have been hard at work coming up with the programme of events for next year.

Without further ado, please find attached pdf with 'provisional info for 2011.

The exact dates will be confirmed in due course, and information will be added to the website.

The Week Ahead 20 December 2010

Well the Week Ahead is rather uncertain for we Harriers. A combination of icy roads and the possibility of the Leisure Centre closing early when conditions are bad (it closed at 6pm today, Monday, and may well do for the rest of the week if the weather doesn’t improve drastically) may cause us to implement Plan B.

A likely alternative to Tuesday’s advertised Hayesgate Fartlek could be a 2 mins fast/1 min slow session on the Leis Ctre field. You may remember that we did this very successfully last Winter in similar circumstances.

Continuing slippery tarmac on Thursday may also force a rejig that evening.

So please watch this Blog for the latest news.

PS Please contact Dick for any bright ideas you may have for safe training.

Update on Xmas Tree race tomorrow

Spoke to the organiser this morning. They have had about as much snow as Chepstow i.e. 1 or 2in max, so at the moment the race should go ahead.  Check the Forest of Dean running club website for further info though.  www.fodac.org.uk

I have been on a lovely long run this morning and conditions are lovely if a little slower than usual.  Bear in mind that there may be a frost so underfoot may be icier tomorrow.  Also snow may hide all sorts of icy sections, so just be careful!

My personal suggestions are:

  • allow more time to travel to Elwood

  • wear the grippiest shoes you have - if I was running I would wear fell shoes, otherwise trail shoes.  There is a bit of tarmac I think, so spikes not a good idea.

See you there!

Xmas Tree race on Sunday - update

The organisers are making a decision tomorrow morning whether to go ahead with Sunday's race, depending on the amount of snow we get overnight.

I will put a post on the blog as soon as I hear anything, likewise if anyone else hears anything please let me know!

Fingers xxxxx!!

The Week Ahead 13 Dec 2010

Well it’s coming on apace and in a sennight’s time it’ll be the Winter Solstice (does that sound suitably folksy and philosophical enough for ya?).

This Tuesday we’re having a go at Steep Street for the first time this winter. It’ll be six long and six short hills alternately. Pace yourself with the longs, and go flat out for the shorts.

Thursday holds the double delights of the Sedbury run and the pre-xmas visit to the Mughal Spice for the all-you-can-eat curry. Please tell Niki if you’re going.

And you’ll doubtless have seen (on the Blog before this one) Vanessa’s plug for Sunday’s Christmas Tree Club Champs race. Finish the year on a high with a bash at this great seasonal event.

Christmas Tree race, Sunday 19th December

Sunday is the final race in the 2010 Club Championship!!  It's a lovely 5-6mile off road route from Ellwood football club in the Forest of Dean.  There are plenty of places if you want to enter on the day.  Tinsel optional but it will add to the festive atmosphere!

AGM Highlights

The 53 Harriers present applauded Eric Bailey as he received the Meritorious Award from Welsh Athletics President, John Penny. As well as his long service with Chepstow  as coach, juniors leader and committee member, Eric has served on many WA and East Wales committees, has been a representative team selector and manager, was permit officer for many years and has generally devoted long hours to the cause.

As an addendum to his report, Chair Andy Ost said that there might be a potential clash in June between our annual participation in the Welsh Castles Relay and a suggested 2011 overseas trip to the Normandy landing races.

Treasurer Bram Fisher presented a healthy cash statement, but warned that our financial wellbeing was very dependent on income from our open races. The motion to increase membership fees was passed (please see AGM notice for details).

All uncontested Committee nominations were agreed, and Mark Harvey was voted Men’s Team Captain. James Blore was invited to join the Committee in a role to be agreed.

The motion to award a gift to members of winning LCL teams was accepted. The qualifying  criterion was changed to running or helping in any six of the ten races.

The motion to go for ClubMark certification was also passed with Gerry Ashton approved as manager.

The first four 2011 Club Championship races were announced as the Lliswerry 8 on 30 Jan; the LCL XC at Parc Bryn Bach on 20 Feb; the Hogweed Half Marathon on 20 Mar; and the Sugar Loaf Fell Race on 9 April.
