The Week Ahead 29 November 2010

If the weather’s kind, it’s down to the Severn Bridge on Tuesday for our monthly 5k time trial. It may well be a little cool and bracing but conducive to a good performance.

A sloppy piece of work by the Chief Coach has the Thursday run advertised as the Beachley jaunt, but those with sharp memories may recall that we trod those lanes last week. So we’re going to do the ever-popular Tour of the Town instead. That’s better, eh dear Reader?

And of course the Off-Road crew will be enjoying snow-covered trails in the moonlight with a little help from head torches.

A busy weekend beckons with Gwent League cross-countrying on Saturday at Bristol’s Blaise Castle just over the Second Severn Crossing – the old Bridge being closed heading east into England. Our Club Captains will be posting travel times later in the week, and also ask you to register your intention to run on the Bulletin Board.

A double treat on Sunday with that perennial December Shropshire treat – yes, the Cardington Cracker is waiting to be pulled

Then on your way back you are cordially invited to Ashton Towers at 4pm for Sue & Gerry’s Fell Race Series Presentation and bun struggle. This annual institution offers scrummy food and glittering company at Sue and Gerry’s Prospect House, Monmouth. Contact one or the other to tell them you will of course be coming

London Marathon Draw

The following club members were awarded places in the 2011 London Marathon in last night's draw-

Phil Scrivens, Dave Somersall, Andy Blackmore and Colin Parry.

Club places can be substituted with another runner in the event of injury etc., provided we advise the London Marathon organisers by 11th Feb 2011. To allow for this we also drew reserve places in this order –

Brett Regulski, Paul Lidgett, Mike Smith and Steve Harris.  If any of the lucky four runners should find themselves unable to run before the deadline date the first reserve (Brett) should be offered their place.

If you have a London place either from the ballot or the club and wish to travel up with the Chepstow party by coach see Syd for details.

The Week Ahead 15 November 2010

First time this season, on Tuesday we’re returning to one of the new sessions that Ivan introduced last year – the Beech Grove Hills. It’s a gentle slope leading away from the Athletic Club in Bulwark.

40 seconds up, then 80 seconds down, four times each set. Do either three or four sets according to taste.

On Thursday the Hayesgate runs take their turn. Follow the link on the Training page to have a look at the map.

The Club Championship is nearing its finale with the Elan Valley10 on Saturday. Plenty of ups and downs along country lanes, it’s also the last race in the East Wales Road Championships for 2010.

We’re meeting at the Leisure Centre at 10am – be there for a fine race that starts with a long downhill from the top of the dam.

The Week Ahead 8 Nov 2010

Well, The Week Behind was a good one I thought, with a hard session on the Tuesday, a good choice of distances on the Thursday run, and a great team effort on Sunday with a well-organised cross-country, and a marvellously hosted LCL presentation with Chepstow’s now famous home-made cakes for all who packed out the bar to see the Summer League and Combined Seasons trophies handed out.

This week ahead will have to be really good to match all that I’m thinking…How about four clockwise laps of the Danes Loop for Tuesday? Then the Shirehampton Runs on Thursday, followed by the monthly fun of Curry Night?

Alas this Sunday's Gwent Lg xc has now been cancelled, so at present no race in view for the weekend.

LCL Prizegiving and Cross-Country

Congrats to all the runners and teams who won trophies at the presentation after the first LCL cross-country at Chepstow today.

Thanks to Martyn and Jeanette for all their work throughout the season, and for organizing the trophies and the prize-giving.

And thanks to all the Chepstow home-bakers who provided the delicious range of cakes and cookies.

The race itself was well attended and many runners commended the excellent course round Piercefield Park. Well done to James Blore and his assistants, Vanessa and Lou, for a demanding and well-marked course.

And a special thanks to John Thomas, Jane and Geoff Bayliss for helping check the course this morning, even though they weren’t running themselves. And thanks to Andy and Sue Ost in charge of the crèche.

Syd did a brilliant job at the finish with Martyn, and there seemed to be a record number of supporters cheering us round.

Chepstow Leisure Centre League Cross Country in Piercefield Park

This Sunday is the first cross country in the LCL this season, hosted by Chepstow Harriers. The course will be in Piercefield Park – 7.2 k for women, 9.5 for men – designed this year by James.

The prize presentation for the LCL road race series and the combined cross country and road will be in Chepstow LC bar after the race.

We would like to invite runners from all the LCL clubs to join us in the bar after the race ( and a shower ) for a drink and some homemade cakes.

Please can I ask Chepstow runners to make a cake or cookies.  Please  bring them to the bar after the race where Polly and Ceri ( my girls ) will be setting them out.

Any runners, supporters who would like to meet to jog to the race start from the leisure centre please meet by reception at 10.15 am.

It would also be great to have a photographer – a photo of the race start for a press article plus a new homepage photo would be good.  So if anyone is not running please bring your camera.

We are setting out the course on Saturday which will be checked by Dick on Sunday so help is mainly needed in taking down the course.  After you have run please take some tape and stakes back to Dick’s car – maroon Mitsubishi which will be in the top car park.  Thanks.

See you Sunday – forecast is good!

The Week Ahead 2 Nov 2010

We’re well into the autumn routine now, and it’s down to Thornwell again for the popular Loop on Tuesday. Four loops with 90 secs recovery. Some may drive down to save the two mile jog there, but make sure you run a loop to warm up while you’re waiting for the rest to arrive. On Thursday we’re doing the Boughspring runs anti-clockwise, so it’s down past the Sedbury shops, left along Sedbury Lane, across the A48, then make-your-mind-up time at the Bishton Lane junction, and again at Netherhope Lane. See the map at then on Sunday we host the first Leisure Ctre League cross-country of the new season. It’s in Piercefield Park at 11, and runners will be jogging over from the LC at 10.15. Don’t forget your LCL number. First-timers can get a number from Syd on Tuesday or Thursday, or Sunday morning at a pinch if you warn Syd in advance and give him your date of birth. All Harriers are asked to help with setting up or taking down the course. We meet at 9am in the top car park to help set up, which saves you having to go round the course after the race. Otherwise please help pick up the sticks and tape straight after the race. The Summer League Presentation takes place in the bar after the race – details in the Club email just sent out to all members.
